Convert JPEG pixels into scalable artwork

JPG is designed for compressed raster images. Compression can add faint blocks, halos and extra shades around otherwise clean edges. ByePixel groups related colours and traces their boundaries into SVG shapes.

For logos and simple graphics, start with the actual number of visible colours. Auto mode evaluates several tracing candidates and chooses the strongest result.

  • Start with the least-compressed original you have.
  • Avoid screenshots that have already been resized several times.
  • Use fewer colours for flat artwork and more for detailed illustrations.
  • Inspect thin strokes, counters and corners at high zoom.

What an SVG changes

A traced SVG can scale without pixelation and can be recoloured or edited by path. Vectorization does not restore detail that was absent from the JPG, so source quality still matters.

Frequently asked questions

Are JPG and JPEG the same for conversion?

Yes. They are names for the same image format, and ByePixel accepts both extensions.

Why do I see extra colours around JPG edges?

JPEG compression blends neighbouring pixels. ByePixel attempts to consolidate transitional shades, but using a cleaner source produces the best result.

Is the JPG uploaded anywhere?

No. The current ByePixel converter processes the image locally in your browser.
